Upcoming Opportunities for Peer Learning: Local Responses to Address Discrimination and Foster Participation for Migrants and Refugees

  1. Session at the IOPD Conference on Migrants and Refugees Participation in Local Policies

Monday 6 November, 16:30 – 17:30, UTC-3

The Mayors Mechanism, will partner with the City of Rio de Janeiro, Migration Youth and Children Platform (MYCP), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to host a dedicated session entitled: "Leveraging the Participation of (Young) Migrants and Refugees to Co-design Inclusive Local Policies and Reshape Public Narratives on Human Mobility”, on the sidelines of the 22nd International Observatory on Participatory Democracy (IOPD).

This conversation, including speakers from the City of Rio de Janeiro, Rennes and MYCP, will gather cities that have taken innovative action to include migrants and refugees in the design of their local migration and forced displacement policies, as well as invite cities that are thinking to set up such a process, for an exchange on what works and what doesn’t.

A specific part of the conversation will zoom in on the opportunities of working with migrant and refugee youth in this process. The Mayors Mechanism and MCYP will take this opportunity to launch a new Guide on Meaningful Engagement of Youth to Localise Global Migration and Forced Displacement Goals (EN/FR/ES/PT).

The event will also offer the opportunity for cities to learn more about advocacy opportunities and ways in which their expertise can be leveraged at the international level through the Call to Local Action for Migrants and Refugees

2. Online City to City Peer Learning: Local Responses to Address discrimination and Foster Participation for Migrants and Refugees

14 - 15 November, different sessions per time zone

Is your city or region taking action to tackle discrimination, or does your city or region have specific expertise with regards to involving migrants and refugees in your local policy planning, implementation and review? Would you like to exchange with other cities to identify opportunities for further action, discuss challenges, and share lessons learned?

Or, is your city or region thinking of setting this up locally, but are you lacking information on what works and what doesn’t?

Join the upcoming online peer learning organized by UCLG as part of the Call to Local Action for Migrants and Refugees, where cities, regions, and partners will discuss what it takes to create welcoming environments that uphold human rights and enhance social cohesion and economic vitality.

This peer learning event will build on the discussions taking place at the 22nd IOPD Conference “Participatory Democracy for Diverse, Inclusive and Transparent Cities” (6-8 November) in Rio de Janeiro and at the Brazilian National Network of Welcoming Cities (Rede Nacional de Cidades Acolhedoras) event “Building territories of citizenship” (9-10 November) in Brazil.

The learning outputs will also feed into the messages that our constituency will bring to the Global Refugee Forum (GRF) from 13-15 December 2023, and the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) from 23-25 January 2024.

Please register here for the Peer Learning sessions by 10 November. If your city would like to share and discuss a local practice as part of the event, please also fill out this form and our team will reach out with further guidance for preparing your presentation.
